Julie M. Ellison Seasonal Tropical Gardening Scholarship
Julie Ellison was born in the Islands, and even though she grew up in the mountain west, she always thought of Hawaii as her true home. She had a strong entrepreneurial spirit and was self-taught in all of her endeavors. Her real love was landscape design which she taught herself from the ground up - working at nurseries and on grounds crews, reading and observing, and always working at maintaining and propagating her own nursery plants. She owned and operated her own landscape design business, The Art of Gardens, and was a two-time winner of Kona Outdoor Circle's Beautification Awards. Sunset Magazine also featured her design work.
Following her death in 2002, donations were made in Julie's memory to the Kona Outdoor Circle and the Julie M. Ellison Fund was established. This Fund is used to provide scholarships for individuals participating in the Seasonal Tropical Gardening Program offered by Kona Outdoor Circle.
The Seasonal Tropical Gardening Program consists of four seasonal series of classes during each year. Classes are held in the evenings with field trips to botanical gardens, nurseries and other places of interest on Saturday mornings. Speakers are local experts on each topic in the curriculum.
Scholarship: $125 each for the four annual series of the Seasonal Tropical Gardening Classes. The scholarship is retroactive, awarded at the end of a series of classes. The recipient is reimbursed $125 for the tuition paid for the classes just completed.
Eligibility: Any student taking a series of Seasonal Tropical Gardening classes. Completion of all four series of classes is NOT required, but completion is required for the series of classes for which the scholarship application is made.
Application method: An applicant shall submit an application to Kona Outdoor Circle, prior to the stated deadline. Two letters of reference must accompany the application.
